Palm Beach Airport Renamed for Trump in Fitting Local Tribute

President Donald J. Trump International Airport officially opened under its new name on Thursday, marking a meaningful moment for a South Florida community that has long considered the president one of its own. The Federal Aviation Administration confirmed that the name change took effect July 9, transforming what had been known as Palm Beach International Airport for nearly fifty years into a lasting tribute to the man whose presence has shaped the region for decades.

The change did not happen overnight. It followed legislation signed by Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis in March, which gave the state naming authority over its major commercial airports and redesignated the Palm Beach facility in the president’s honor. Although Democratic lawmakers raised concerns in February about the estimated five million dollar cost of updating signs and materials, the measure passed the Legislature and became law, setting the stage for Thursday’s celebration.

Supporters of the renaming point to a simple truth: few names are as closely tied to Palm Beach as Trump’s. His Mar-a-Lago estate sits just miles from the airport, and he has used the facility constantly throughout both of his presidential terms. Eric Trump, the president’s son and executive vice president of the Trump Organization, made that connection clear during an appearance on “Fox & Friends.”

“I don’t think there’s anybody more synonymous with Palm Beach than Donald Trump,” he said.

The airport now joins a respected group of American airports named for former presidents, including Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport in Virginia, John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York, and Gerald R. Ford International Airport in Michigan. Advocates say the addition fits naturally into that tradition, honoring a leader whose ties to the community run deep.

A Symbolic First Landing

The celebration began before sunrise, when Eric Trump made sure the first flight to touch down under the new name carried special meaning. He chose to fly in aboard Trump Force One rather than let a commercial carrier claim that moment.

“There’s no way in hell I was letting UPS be the first plane to land, so we got on Trump Force One… we touched down at exactly 5:01 a.m. this morning, and it was a beautiful day,” he said.

He also explained why the plane itself carried significance, describing it as central to the story of his father’s political rise.

“This is the plane that carried him to victory… It was the backdrop of so many of the presidential campaign stops,” he said, adding that the flight represented “an incredibly special moment for us this morning.”

Later, reflecting on the deeper meaning behind the day, Eric Trump described it as a tribute to his father’s years of service.

“He’s fought like hell for all of us and, as a son who worked so hard to make this happen, I couldn’t be more proud. Today was a really, really special moment,” he said.

In a separate social media post, Eric Trump highlighted the personal pride he feels each time he travels through the airport, writing, “As a son, and someone who flies out of this airport nearly every day, I will forever be proud to see the initials ‘DJT’ on my boarding pass.”

President Trump also celebrated the milestone directly, expressing enthusiasm for what the renamed airport could become. “The Area is HOT, the Location is GREAT, and the Renovation will be SPECTACULAR,” he wrote, predicting it would soon rank among the “Greatest and Most Spectacular Airports anywhere in the World!”

What Comes Next

While the FAA change took effect immediately, airport officials say the shift will unfold gradually to avoid disrupting travelers. For the next 40 days, passengers will continue using the familiar PBI code when booking flights and checking bags, with the switch to the new DJT code scheduled for Aug. 18. Airline analyst Henry Harteveldt told CBS News that carriers have prepared for the adjustment, noting that flight attendants may simply welcome passengers to “West Palm Beach” during the interim.

Airport officials have echoed that message of patience and pride. “We’re working behind the scenes to update our physical signage, terminal spaces, and digital channels to our new name: President Donald J. Trump International Airport,” the airport said in a statement, thanking passengers for their support during the transition.

For many in the Palm Beach community, the renaming represents more than a bureaucratic update. It stands as a recognition of a man whose name has long been part of the local landscape, and a welcoming gesture to a president who has called the area home for years
