Trump Calls for an End to Sanctuary Cities and Demands Cooperation
President Donald Trump is once again pressing Democratic leaders to cooperate with federal immigration enforcement, arguing that sanctuary city policies are fueling chaos, violence, and unnecessary loss of life. In a series of statements and Truth Social posts, Trump framed his call as a push for common sense law enforcement and national calm, while accusing Democrats of deliberately resisting solutions in order to undermine him politically.
Trump’s message is direct. Cooperation, not confrontation, is the path to public safety.
Trump laid out a clear list of demands that he says Democratic governors and mayors must follow to restore order and reduce violence linked to immigration enforcement.
• Turn over all criminal illegal migrants currently held in state prisons and local jails to federal authorities for immediate deportation
• Transfer custody of all illegal migrants arrested by local police to federal immigration officials
• Require local law enforcement to assist federal officers in apprehending illegal migrants wanted for crimes
• Partner with the federal government to rapidly remove criminal illegal migrants, citing improved safety in jurisdictions that already cooperate
Trump emphasized that these actions are not radical, but standard law enforcement practices that protect citizens and officers alike.
What Trump Has Asked Congress to Do
Beyond executive enforcement, Trump is urging Congress to act. He has called for immediate legislation to end sanctuary city policies nationwide, labeling them the root cause of disorder surrounding immigration enforcement.
He said American cities should be safe sanctuaries for law abiding citizens only, not political safe havens for criminals. Senator Lindsey Graham publicly backed Trump’s position and pledged to introduce legislation to permanently end sanctuary jurisdictions.
Trump argues that the contrast between Republican and Democrat led states tells the full story. He cited Texas, Georgia, Florida, Tennessee, and Louisiana, where cooperation between local police and Immigration and Customs Enforcement has led to more than 150,000 arrests of criminal illegal migrants in the past year without riots or unrest.
According to Trump, coordination prevents chaos. Resistance invites it.
He sharply criticized Democratic leaders such as Tim Walz and Jacob Frey, accusing them of obstructing federal operations and encouraging agitation against law enforcement.
The Pretti Incident
The fatal shooting of Alex Pretti, a 37 year old intensive care nurse, has become a flashpoint in this conflict. Pretti was shot during a tense confrontation with federal officers while filming immigration agents in Minneapolis.
Democratic leaders blamed federal enforcement for escalating tensions, while Trump argued that sanctuary policies created the dangerous environment in the first place. Trump confirmed that his administration is reviewing the shooting, stating that he does not like any shooting, but also noting concerns about Pretti being armed during a volatile protest.
Trump signaled that federal agents would eventually leave Minneapolis once their mission is complete, but insisted that enforcement cannot stop simply because local leaders refuse to cooperate.
Supporters say Trump is acting like a national leader by demanding consistency, clarity, and cooperation across jurisdictions. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem accused Democratic leaders of putting criminals ahead of citizens and refusing to help protect their own officers.
Democratic officials counter that sanctuary policies are legal and necessary, and argue that local police should not be tasked with federal immigration enforcement. Minneapolis Police Chief Brian O’Hara said local departments are already overstretched and complying with existing law.
Trump rejects that argument, saying Democrats are choosing political theater over public safety.
A Leadership Divide
Trump’s position is rooted in the belief that law enforcement works best when every level of government pulls in the same direction. From his perspective, sanctuary cities are not about compassion, but about defiance, and that defiance is costing lives.
He says the country needs peace, order, and cooperation, not manufactured chaos designed to discredit his administration. Whether Democrats respond to his call or continue resisting may determine whether the immigration debate cools down or grows even more volatile in the weeks ahead.
