Trump’s Closing the Door on “Woke”: Funding Slashed on DEI and Radical Ideology Programs

President Donald Trump has launched one of the most aggressive efforts in modern political history to dismantle diversity, equity, and inclusion programs across the federal government. Through sweeping budget proposals, executive orders, and enforcement mechanisms, Trump is targeting what he repeatedly describes as “woke” ideology embedded in taxpayer-funded institutions.

At the center of this campaign is a clear objective: redirect federal dollars away from programs that prioritize identity-based initiatives and toward what the administration calls merit-based and neutral governance.

A Budget Built to Eliminate “Woke” Programs

Trump’s latest federal budget proposal makes his intentions unmistakable. The administration is seeking deep cuts to programs tied to diversity, civil rights enforcement, and minority-focused initiatives.

A White House budget document states plainly, “President Trump is committed to eliminating radical gender and racial ideologies that poison the minds of Americans.”

Among the most notable cuts is the complete elimination of the Minority Business Development Agency, saving $47 million. The administration justified the move by pointing out that the agency “supported only businesses owned by racial minorities.”

Additional cuts include:

  • $150 million reduction to the International Trade Administration, targeting programs for “traditionally underserved exporters”
  • Elimination of funding for Equity Assistance Centers, which provided training to schools on bullying and prejudice
  • Cuts to teacher training grants accused of promoting “instruction on white privilege and white supremacy”
  • $136 million reduction to education grants, some of which supported LGBTQ-related initiatives
  • $50 million cut to housing programs accused of funding “divisive D.E.I. agendas”
  • $145 million cut to transportation grants tied to DEI criteria
  • $395 million reduction to a senior employment program described as supporting left-leaning organizations

Supporters of the president see these cuts as long overdue. To them, taxpayer dollars should not be used to fund programs that divide Americans along racial or ideological lines.

Executive Orders and Enforcement Power

Trump’s strategy goes far beyond budget cuts. His administration has moved aggressively to enforce anti-DEI policies across both government and private sectors.

A major executive order signed in March 2026 requires federal contractors to eliminate DEI practices entirely. Companies that fail to comply risk having their contracts “cancelled, terminated, or suspended,” and may even be barred from future government work.

The order defines prohibited practices broadly, including any actions involving “disparate treatment based on race or ethnicity” in hiring, promotions, or access to programs.

The Department of Justice has also been tasked with enforcing these rules, with the potential use of the False Claims Act to pursue violators. This means companies could face significant financial penalties if they are found to be engaging in what the administration considers discriminatory DEI practices.

For supporters, this represents a return to fairness. Trump has consistently argued that DEI policies are “anti-merit” and discriminate against groups such as white people and men.

Cleaning House Across Federal Institutions

The administration’s efforts extend into nearly every corner of the federal government. Within hours of returning to office, Trump moved to terminate DEI offices and repeal prior executive orders designed to promote equal opportunity.

Government agencies have removed language such as “injustice” and “oppression” from official materials. Historical narratives have also been reshaped, with the president criticizing institutions like the Smithsonian for focusing too heavily on negative aspects of American history.

Supporters argue that these actions are necessary to restore balance and patriotism in public institutions. They see a system that had become overly focused on grievance and identity politics, and view Trump’s reforms as a corrective measure.

Targeting Taxpayer-Funded “Woke” Institutions

Beyond internal government programs, scrutiny is also being applied to organizations that receive federal funding.

A watchdog report highlighted how the National Academies of Sciences, Engineering, and Medicine used taxpayer money for projects tied to DEI, transgender issues, and climate advocacy. One critic described the institution as “a radical woke organization masquerading as a nonpartisan educational institution.”

These findings have reinforced the administration’s broader argument that public funds have been used to push ideological agendas under the guise of research and education.

Trump’s campaign against “woke” spending has also included efforts to defund public broadcasting outlets like NPR and PBS.

The administration argued these organizations were spreading “radical, woke propaganda disguised as ‘news.’”

The divide over Trump’s actions is sharp.

Supporters argue that DEI programs have gone too far, creating division and prioritizing identity over competence. They believe Trump is restoring fairness and ensuring that taxpayer money is not used to promote what they see as ideological activism.

Critics, including civil rights organizations, claim the administration is rolling back decades of progress. Groups like the NAACP have accused Trump of carrying out an “assault on civil rights” and undermining protections for historically disadvantaged communities.

Legal challenges are already underway, and many of Trump’s proposals will ultimately depend on congressional approval.
