Trump’s Gracious But Tongue-in-Cheek Board of Peace Invitation to Putin

President Donald Trump has made a bold and calculated move on the world stage by inviting Russian President Vladimir Putin to join his newly created Gaza Board of Peace. Far from a concession, the invitation is widely viewed by supporters as a strategic maneuver that costs Trump nothing while placing pressure squarely on Putin. The move reinforces Trump’s claim that he is pushing for peace globally while exposing who is actually standing in the way.

The Board of Peace is a new international body created by President Trump to oversee the next phase of the U.S.-brokered Gaza peace plan between Israel and Hamas. The board is designed to move beyond temporary ceasefires and into long term reconstruction, security, and governance for Gaza.

According to draft charters reported by Bloomberg and The Atlantic, the Board of Peace will guide reconstruction funding, supervise security arrangements, and help transition Gaza toward stable governance. Trump serves as the inaugural chair and has final authority over which nations are admitted.

The board becomes official once three member states approve its charter. Its stated mission is to promote stability, restore lawful governance, and secure enduring peace in conflict zones, with Gaza as its first test case.

Why the Board Was Created

Gaza has been left largely devastated following Hamas’s October 7, 2023 attack on Israel and the extensive Israeli military response that followed. Although a ceasefire has been declared, the territory faces massive infrastructure damage, humanitarian strain, and unresolved security threats.

Trump’s team has argued that traditional international bodies have failed to deliver lasting peace. The Board of Peace was created as a new mechanism, separate from the United Nations, to coordinate funding, security, and reconstruction with clear accountability and enforcement.

The Founding Members

The White House announced a founding executive board made up of senior political, diplomatic, and financial figures closely aligned with Trump’s foreign policy approach.

The founding members include Secretary of State Marco Rubio, special envoy Steve Witkoff, and Trump’s son in law Jared Kushner. They are joined by former British prime minister Tony Blair, World Bank president Ajay Banga, billionaire investor Marc Rowan, and U.S. national security adviser Robert Gabriel.

Trump chairs the board himself and retains final approval over membership.

What It Costs to Join

The Board of Peace has two tiers of participation. National leaders can serve a three year term without any required financial contribution. Countries that want permanent membership must contribute $1 billion.

According to U.S. officials, those funds are earmarked for rebuilding Gaza, which the World Bank estimates will require more than $50 billion in total. Supporters say this structure ensures that countries seeking long term influence must also commit serious resources.

Why Putin Was Invited

The Kremlin confirmed that Russian President Vladimir Putin received an invitation through diplomatic channels. Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said Russia was studying the details and seeking clarification from Washington.

From Trump’s perspective, the invitation is a calculated move with multiple advantages. First, it is highly unlikely that Putin will accept. Russia remains deeply entrenched in its war in Ukraine and has repeatedly rejected ceasefire proposals.

Second, the invitation serves as a direct jab at Putin. Accepting a seat on a peace board while continuing a brutal war in Ukraine would invite immediate accusations of hypocrisy.

Third, Putin knows that joining would put him under global scrutiny. Any continued attacks on Ukraine would undermine his credibility and expose contradictions between words and actions.

Finally, the invitation highlights Trump’s central argument to the world. Trump is offering peace, while Putin is the one breaking it. If Putin declines, Trump loses nothing. If Putin accepts, the spotlight turns even harsher on Russia’s conduct.

The invitation comes nearly five years into Russia’s war on Ukraine, a conflict that has killed tens of thousands of civilians and hundreds of thousands of soldiers. Despite Trump’s insistence that Putin wants peace, negotiations have produced no major concessions.

Trump has grown publicly frustrated, announcing sanctions last year on Russia’s two largest oil companies. He has also criticized Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, though Zelensky has responded by arguing that Russia, not Ukraine, is the obstacle to peace.

Against this backdrop, inviting Putin to the Board of Peace reframes the issue. It puts the burden of proof on Moscow.

Reactions have been mixed. Countries including the United Kingdom, Canada, Egypt, Turkey, Brazil, Argentina, India, Hungary, Vietnam, Kazakhstan, and Morocco have confirmed receiving invitations. Some have accepted, while others are reviewing terms.

France has indicated it will not join at this stage, citing concerns about the board’s scope and its relationship to the United Nations. Canada has said it would not pay for permanent membership.

Israel has raised objections to aspects of the board’s structure and certain invited countries, though Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu has said disagreements will not damage relations with Trump.

Inviting Putin is classic Trump strategy. It costs nothing, exposes contradictions, and reframes the global narrative. Trump can credibly say he offered Russia a seat at the peace table. If Putin refuses, the refusal speaks for itself.

At the same time, the invitation underscores Trump’s message that he is willing to break with failed diplomatic traditions and pursue peace through leverage, funding, and accountability rather than endless resolutions.

In that sense, the invitation is less about Russia joining and more about clarifying who truly wants peace. For Trump’s supporters, it is a win either way and a move that reinforces his claim to be leading the most aggressive push for peace on the global stage.
